In this world of modern technological advancements there are also new health issues in the workplace due to the type of environment employees are now expected to thrive in. Ergonomics is the study of people in their work environment. Many Americans work from desktops, laptops, phones, and other smart devices and continue to use these same devices when they return home for the evening.
The Most Common Disorders and Injuries From Computers
- Neck and Back pain
- Disc herniations
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Elbow/Shoulder Tendonitis
- Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
- Eye Strain
How Do These Injuries Develop?
Workplace injuries commonly come from one of two sources: repetitive motions and holding prolonged postures. Repetitive motions may include activities like lifting boxes, typing, or using a mouse. If the workstation set up is not designed properly it can put your body in a potentially harmful position, and over time with repetition this can cause muscles, joints, and tendons to wear down leading to pain and injury. Holding one position for a long period of time will cause muscles to tighten, leading to a reduction in blood flow. This not only affects the health of the muscles and joints, but also reduces blood flow to the brain, and can also contribute to fatigue and brain fog. Offices whose employees are suited with proper office set up have fewer health problems, require less days off due to pain and injury, and are happier.
Posture and positioning play a major role in the development of these disorders. Whether it’s lifting heavy objects, typing, looking at the computer screen, looking down at your phone, or even reading a book can contribute to these health problems if not done correctly. Offices whose employees are suited with proper office set up have fewer health problems and are happier.
RxWellness Ergonomic Program
That’s why the doctors at RxWellnes Spine & Health place such an emphasis on the correlation between an employee’s health and their occupation, and offer a holistic approach to wellness in an office environment.
Our Ergonomic Program has three tiers for your organization’s needs:
Tier 1: Wellness Day
If you would like us to host an in-house wellness day for your employees we offer Ergonomic Education and Wellness Techniques. We also offer the option of a Relax-the-Back (seated massage) event.
Tier 2: Environment Assessment
During an Environment Assessment our licensed Ergonomic Doctor will conduct an environment walk-thru where we will briefly interview a few employees. This initial assessment allows us to provide a baseline of recommended ERG office furniture and accessories.
Tier 3: Individualized Assessment
This is a one-on-one ergonomic evaluation and fitting. The doctor will discuss employee concerns with their work environment, taking into account any unique factors such as pertinent medical history. We will identify risk areas and make any necessary adjustments. A final individualized list of recommendations will be made available if necessary in order to prevent performance degradation.
Our office ergonomics presentation provides guidance on the most effective and efficient workstations, as well as tips, tricks, and exercises for not only alleviating pain, but also preventing it. Our on-site, office ergonomics assessments include:
- Thorough exam of individual workstation setups
- Environmental scan
- In-depth assessment of individual postural alignment
- Opportunities for adjustments and improvements
- Comprehensive report
