What is Graston Technique?

Graston technique is a special technique used to break up scar tissue restriction by using patented instruments to treat chronic injuries or surgical scars. It uses stainless steel instruments to mobilize soft tissue and promote faster healing in conditions that were once thought to be permanent or untreatable. The tools vary in size and shape and are chosen by the chiropractor for their affectability on a specific area. The frequency of visits for Graston Technique may vary from two visits a week for 4-5 weeks at first, but will ultimately depend on the chiropractor’s recommendation, which is based on the patient’s need.

Dr. McGourty and Graston Technique

Graston Technique is a very useful treatment option, and many patients see noticeable results after a few treatment sessions. Dr. McGourty is the Board-certified chiropractor at the RxWellness Tysons’ location, and she provides some very useful insight on Graston technique. According to Dr. McGourty, “Graston [Technique] is used to treat scar tissue…[in] post-surgical patients, [and] a multitude of conditions where you are trying to break up…scar tissue on a superficial level.” She goes on to explain that Graston Technique would be great for targeting areas like tightness in the upper traps, and patients with knee-related conditions, like patellar tendonitis, runner’s knee, or jumper’s knee.

Dr. McGourty does a wonderful job of explaining the versatility of Graston Technique, however, she does not recommend this technique to all her patients. She explains that, “patients…on blood thinners, patients that bruise easily…or patients that have a blood clotting disorder,” would not be good candidates for Graston Technique. She goes on to explain that because, “you are scrapping the tissue on the surface…[and therefore] creating a lot of circulation to that tissue…it can cause bruising.” This means that patients with conditions that prevent clotting would not receive any benefits from Graston Technique because the risks would overshadow the advantages. Dr. McGourty further explains that, “the treatment time for Graston is only 2-5 minutes because if you exceed that [timeframe] you are going to bruise the patient, [therefore] when you start seeing…petechiae or spotting you should stop treating.” She also demonstrates a professional level of discretion when deciding how to treat a patient. She individualizes each patient’s experience by first listening to their concerns and then creating a plan that works best for their healing process. Sometimes that plan includes Graston Technique and sometimes it does not.
